T-Shirts at Work: A Do or a Don’t?

The long debated topic of what is and what is not appropriate to wear to work has been a long standing one. What is and what has been worn to work has significantly changed over the years, each change becoming more of what some deam as too lax. These changes and acceptable work wear rules can be attributed to many things, including a natural change in clothing styles as the years change.

DO:Keep it to a minimum – DON’T make tees part of your weekly rotation

DO:Keep it professional – DON’T wear wording, prints or graphics that are not appropriate for work

Today there is much we are able to wear to work that our parents and our parents parents would have never thought they would see; jeans (the horror!) sleeveless tops (that’s a discussion for another day) and even shorts in some work environments.

DO: keep it neat and professional – DON’T   Wear oversized or old, worn tees

DO: Remember it’s still work, DON’T get too comfortable. Keep the rest of your look as close to professional and typical work attire as you can.

I started my professional work career in corporate American and because of this and lessons taught while in college studying business, there are some things that I will always be traditional about when it comes to work wear. As my work environments have changed over the years; becoming more creative than some of my work wear practices have relaxed , but some of the core, more conservative principles, I have kept in place.

DO: Opt to wear your tee as a Casual Friday option – DON’T wear for presentation or office meeting (unless it ties in with your presentation or meeting)

DO: Chose an option that ties in with work or the company brand. Ex: brands the company represents or company issued tees

So in regards to the question of t-shirts at work, my take is this; it’s a real grey area. With the jobs people do today and the environments they work in, there are times when a tee is completely appropriate and there are other times you should chose to save the tee for the weekend. My best advise, keep my DOs & DON’Ts in mind and follow the cues of your work culture.

As always, stay stylish and send me any questions you may have on style!

#Ask_Bianca: The Highs & Lows of Heels for Work

Earlier this week Someone  asked me to talk about what is appropriate in regard to heel height when comes to work. So here are a couple of my tips on heel height; what is ok and what you should maybe pass on…

For work/corporate, the recommended heel height is around 3-3.5″ or shorter per your personal preference. You don’t want to go any higher than 4″

Things to avoid for corporate: you don’t want your shoes to look like “club” shoes; avoid super strappy heels, options that tie up the leg, those with a high, exposed platform. These types of shoes can send the wrong message and can also be a distraction or draw the wrong attention.

Classic, basic neutral color options like black, navy or nude pumps are always a safe option if you are unsure.

For weekend/outside of the office, your “free” time is really all about what you are comfortable in. If you love heels, this is the time you can do your 4″ or higher. Just remember, the higher the heel, the shorter your skirt or shorts will look since your legs will appear longer. Keep this in mind and plan accordingly based on your occasion/location.
Because all work environments are not the same, some decisions on what is right or wrong will have to be left up to your judgement based on the culture of your work environment. If you are unsure, err on the side of more conservative.
I hope these tips help. Let me know what you guys think!

My Baecation Style

I can hardly believe it is that time again but here we are! It is our anniversary weekend! Year four in the books! I always look forward to our getaways, a time for us to reconnect and be non-parents for just a little bit (I know Caden is enjoying grandparent time).

Now that you know what the vacation is for, let’s get to the good stuff…vacation style! I am such an overpacker. My husband is always shaking his head at just how much I “need” for just a few days. As I always try to tell him, you always gotta be prepared. Every woman knows if you only pack one outfit, something is bound to happen and you will need that one thing you DIDNT pack! Options is the name of the game and I always make sure I have at least two of them. 😉

So check out my pics and commentary below on my Baecation style…

For travel attire, I look for something that will be comfortable but still cute for stops along the way. I like to do layers.…it allows you to adjust for temp & climate changes. Options remember?

A little pattern play for dinner. Found a cute little restaurant called Jestines while searching for a place to eat downtown Charleston. Good food and friendly staff. Get there early, I mean it when I say cute LITTLE spot.

We decided Day two would be a good day for a late start and a relaxed, casual day. Brunch, honey wine tasting and shopping were on the menu for the day. The perfect day for relaxed boyfriends jeans and oversized chambray shirt. Sass up this casual look with a rolled cuff and wedges.

Savannah Bee Company, a place we found while walking after dinner, for a honey wine tasting (who knew you could make wine from honey?!?)

One constant this trip was the heat! After a warm day out and about, I decided to go for something appropriate for the heat. A maxi was the perfect attire for the warm Charleston days and nights. This was comfortable, easy and perfect for dinner. Check out Rarebit, a cute bar/diner with a cool atmosphere and menu including breakfast all day.

Sad to go but it is time to return to the other Carolinas and to my little one! With plans to make a few stops before hitting the road, jeggins and a sleeveless shell was the look. I am not normally a jeggings girl but these are great. Unlike some jeggings, this pair (target clearance!) has the weight and structure of real denim. They look like real jeans, minus the missing front pockets!

Just as four years blew by, so did my weekend Baecation! It was a great break and great memories were made. Hope you enjoy my trip recap via my style chronicles. Until next time…

#Ask_Bianca: What to Wear with my Navy Stripe Blazer?

Hello, good Morning! Another great day to answer a style question. Today we are helping Alicia with what to pair with Her navy striped blazer.

She purchased this blazer and wanted some ideas on what would be good colors to pair with it besides the basic black she normally wears. Check out the looks below I gave her for her cute navy striped jacket..

Navy and green. One of my absolute favorite color combinations. In either a dress like above or a skirt or pants, you can’t go wrong with this color pairing.

Another option we talked about was keeping it neutral on the bottom and adding color up top. For this look we paired dark denim jeans with a bright yellow top and browns edges.

For a more classic look, pair with black pants and a classic white woven. Because navy is also a neutral, it is ok to pair with black for a cool look that doesn’t require all black. Finish with a shoe in a bright color to complete your look.

I love this look. Sill paired with a colored pant but this time a more subdued, soft color. Very feminine and very chic, this pastel pink pant looks super stylish paired with a cream shell and navy stripe jacket. Pair with a nude heel and you are ready.

So, as you can see, the possibilities are endless! With this striped blazer, in a neutral color, you are free to experiment. Have fun, try something new!

Let me know your thoughts and send me pics of your looks! Until next time…

#ASKTHESTYLIST: How To: bridge the gap, modern and retro

So this week, our style question came from a male looking for a more sophisticated look that doesn’t require he give up his retro aesthetic.

I must say this is one that really made me stretch a little. To achieve a look that would be pleasing to Lonnie, I had to find just the right balance between modern and nostalgic.

Let’s hope I didn’t miss the mark. Check out what I came up with below…

Some of the retro aspects Lonnie told me he liked were the patterns of the past and he loved the coats. The suspenders lend a cool throwback vibe that is balanced with the modern feel of the shoe and coat pairings.

The paperboy cap is a classic old school staple. This is paired with a cool plaid blazer and a basic white tee and dark denim for a more current look.

Classic and certainly sophisticated. This time there are plaid windowpane print trousers paired with a soft colored, modern button up and vest.

So what do you think? Did I find the sweet spot between the two worlds? Let’s hope so, I hope I have something that Lonnie will love…Until the next #ASKTHESTYLIST
